Biotronix Division – Bionic Prostheses/Orthoses
About the Biotronix Division
The Biotronix Division of Victhom Human Bionics Inc. specializes in the development and commercialization of advanced mobility devices aimed at restoring the autonomy or enhance the mobility of people with prominent needs with regard to their movements.
The Biotronix Division develops biomechatronic medical devices and currently markets through our partner Ossur the Power Knee motorized lower-limb prosthesis for above-knee amputees.
The Biotronix Division integrates state-of-the-art engineering modules for the development of advanced mobility devices. Since its foundation, the Biotronix Division has built the expertise and competencies necessary for successfully interfacing artificially intelligent biomechatronic devices with the human body. More specifically, the Biotronix Division develops advanced prostheses and orthoses to replace or support the peripheral limbs of the human body.
The Biotronix Division’s team of about fifteen professionals is made up of synergic scientists, engineers and technicians who all share a very distinctive background and have numerous years of experience in the field of biomechatronics. The field of activity of the team includes six fully integrated scientific and technological areas:
- complex control system and actuation technologies;
- artificial intelligence and embedded software;
- high-density power supplies;
- mechanical design;
- electronic design; and
- biomechanics.
The first product that was developed by the Biotronix Division is the motorized leg prosthesis for above-knee amputees. After five years of development, our team has created and developed the world’s first “active” above-knee prosthesis that provides its own mechanical energy and has the necessary level of artificial intelligence to autonomously interact with the user with a significant level of transparency. This “active” prosthesis allows the user to perform non-conventional locomotion tasks such as stair climbing or descending. The Power Knee is currently commercialized by Ossur hf., one of the two world leaders in the field of Orthotics and Prosthetics (O&P).
Our Mission
The mission of the Biotronix Division is to provide mobility capabilities to people with major needs with regard to moving around by making high-end, state-of-the-art mobility devices available.
The Biotronix Division accomplishes its mission, day after day, by creating and developing motorized artificially-controlled prosthetic and orthotic equipment, commonly called “bionic O&P devices”, in order to become one of the world leaders in this futuristic and fast-growing market.
Our Trademark
Since the creation of its first product, the Biotronix Division has used the term “BIONIZED™ BY VICTHOM” with the respective logos, in order to characterize Victhom’s ability to transform passive mechanical computerized equipment into active medical devices that can instantaneously and bidirectional interact in symbiosis with the human body to restore or support the biomechanical functions of the body.
“BIONIZED™ BY VICTHOM” is a pending trademark created to establish the leadership of the Company in terms of creation of bionic devices and more importantly, to formalize the contribution of Victhom Human Bionics in the field of advanced mobility devices.
Victhom intends to use the “BIONIZED™ BY VICTHOM” trademark to distinguish for the business, the clinical and the scientific community in targeted fields of use to recognize truth-based bionic products that actively interact with the individual from other passive “computerized” devices currently on the market.
The Industry
The orthotics industry offers solutions to remedy congenital deformities, osteoarthritis and damaged ligaments, often caused by illnesses connected with old age or lifestyle, as well as sports-related injuries. The orthopaedics industry provides solutions ranging from reconstructive implants (operative) and fracture fixators to soft tissue repair products. Other solutions are reconstructive and rehabilitative braces and supports for the spine and upper/lower extremities.
Prosthetics is the branch of medicine or surgery within the orthopaedic sector dealing with the production and fitting of artificial body parts. Thus, the prosthetic segment focuses on servicing individuals who have experienced some form of amputation.
The orthopaedics industry is highly competitive and is characterized by continuous innovation and rapid technical development. Market competition is based on different aspects such as the range of services offered to patients, education of professionals, product design and effectiveness, accessibility of products and feasibility of the technology used. The size of the orthotics market is estimated at $1.5 billion and although there are no third-party reports on the prosthetics market segment, it is estimated that the total size of the manufacturing part of the prosthetic products market is about $500 million.
Traditionally, the othopeadics industry has been very fragmented, many small market players having focused on small customer segments. However, in recent years the industry has experienced rapid consolidation. This wave of consolidation was first and foremost sparked by increased demand for full service providers, as customers prefer to get total solutions in one place.
